Cool, The Crawdad
This is the first pic of Cool. You can't imagine how hard it is to take a picture of a crawdad.
We have had him about 2 weeks and he's about 3 inches long.
This is Cool after his 3rd molt, on July 7, 2002. It looks like he is climbing his favorite rock,
a 3 pound lava rock. He's 4 inches long and very active. We think he climbs his rock to try and
catch the Bluegill that are in the tank with him.
About Cool
One day, I decided I wanted to keep a few fish native to Tennessee in an aquarium. We went to a Ed Davis'
fish farm and bought 5 small bluegill. As we were leaving, I saw a small crawdad laying on a concrete pad. It
was caked in dirt and obviously dying. Being the animal lover I am, I picked up the thing to put it in some water.
I asked if I could keep it. They said yes and didn't charge anything because they get thousands when they clean
the ponds. So we brought him home and put him in with the bluegill. I wasn't really certain that he would survive.
My wife and kids think he's the coolest thing in a fish tank. Cool, the Crawdad, was born.
After only two months living with us, Cool passed away. He moved to a different location in the tank.
It is highly probable that the dominate bluegill in the tank was harassing him. It is possible that the
bluegill followed it's natural instincts.
